MORNING GROUP
Who is this for?
This course is suitable for people ages 18+
Join us for a 2 hr. coil pottery workshop and make your own wassail drinking bowls.
When: Saturday 6th December
Time: 10 AM to 12 PM
Where: Fenland Orchards Project, Lynn Rd, Wisbech PE14 7AP (next to Wisbech Community Farm)
During this workshop you will be shown how to make a 12 cm. diameter by 6 cm height wassail bowl. But this time with a twist: instead of making the traditional wooden wassail bowls we are using coiled pottery, which predates the potter's wheel by centuries and it is still used to make pottery by people around the world in places like Africa, India and South America.
It’s a practice that connects people to the earth: the time spent shaping the objects it’s a time connecting with “Pachamama” the Quechua word for Mother Earth.
While Pachamama ceremonies and English wassailing come from vastly different cultures, they share a central theme of respecting the Earth and seeking a bountiful harvest through ritual offerings. Both traditions are rooted in ancient agricultural practices and express gratitude and hope for the coming year.
After shaping your bowl you will have a chance to personalise by scraping some shapes on the outside, or, if you prefer, leave it as it is.
Your bowl will need firing and glazing to make it waterproof & dishwasher safe. They will be ready for collection on Saturday 31 January 2026, during a community celebration at The Orchard Project. More details to be shared at the end of the workshop.
During his relaxing & creative session we will offer you hot drinks and some mince pies, please let us know in advance if you have any dietary restrictions.
In collaboration with Fenland Orchards Project and CPL Trust.
